About the project
JMac delivered stages 1 and 2 of The Strand Water Park upgrade for Townsville City Council. Located on Townsville’s beachfront, five minutes from the central business district, the project upgraded the iconic water park to coincide with the 150-year celebration of Townsville’s establishment and included surrounding parkland works, water play rehabilitation, shade structures, seating, lighting, pathways and landscaping.
Scope
Delivery of stages 1 and 2 of The Strand Water Park upgrade
Installed and refurbished water park elements, including the iconic water bucket and other water play features
Removed and replaced softfall, cleaned and repaired drainage systems and reassembled refurbished water play features
Completed mechanical overhaul, structural repairs, repainting and safety upgrades to improve functionality and compliance
Construction of a feature concrete pathway network, pedestrian paving, concrete walls and custom precast seating
Construction of custom-designed steel shelters, shade structures, seating areas and custom metal balustrading with feature glass panel inserts
Installation of electrical lighting, feature landscape lighting and supporting services
Planted five 8 metre feature palms and delivered landscaping works including turf and plants
Outcomes
- JMac was awarded stage 2 following successful delivery of the initial water park upgrade.
- The team provided cost savings to the client by resurfacing the existing light poles.
- JMac redesigned the custom precast seating, reducing the number of segments from 28 to six and completing construction off site to cut installation time and put the project ahead of schedule.
- Daily, weekly and monthly environmental checks were implemented due to the site’s location 50 metres from Cleveland Bay and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
- The rehabilitation works revitalised the facility, supporting safe and reliable operation for a water park that attracts more than 150,000 visitors annually.
- The project maintained The Strand Water Park as an iconic community and visitor attraction on Townsville’s beachfront.
